Florence Knoll, born Florence Schust in 1917 in Saginaw, Michigan, and passed away in 2019, was an architect, furniture designer, and visionary of the modern workspace. A graduate of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, she was heavily influenced by the Bauhaus principles, which advocate for functionality and simplicity in design.
As the design director at Knoll, a company she founded with her husband Hans Knoll, Florence revolutionized post-war office interior design by introducing open and flexible concepts. She also developed furniture lines that have become modern design classics, such as the Florence Knoll sofa and coffee table, characterized by their clean geometry and understated elegance.
Florence Knoll is also recognized for setting the standards for corporate interior design by applying architectural principles to workspace layout, promoting the integration of art and the balance of form and function in her creations.
